Summary

This impact assessment outlines how CRCNA’s protected cropping project (A.3.1819067) helped build the case for expanding controlled-environment horticulture in northern Australia.

It highlights the project’s role in increasing industry knowledge, identifying commercially viable adoption pathways and reducing investment uncertainty for growers and stakeholders. The assessment explores the project’s contribution to stronger horticultural supply chains, improved production resilience and the longer-term potential for new investment, employment and growth in high-value horticulture across the north.

Strengthening Northern Australia’s horticultural sector through assessing protected cropping value chain linkages and pathways for adoption

This project assessed the potential for protected cropping to strengthen northern Australia’s horticulture sector by identifying commercially viable opportunities for adoption across Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Bringing together industry and government partners, the project examined how protected cropping technologies could support more reliable production of high-value fruit and vegetables, improve resource efficiency, and help growers respond to market demand. The research delivered region-specific analysis of the opportunities, constraints and investment pathways for protected cropping in tropical and subtropical production systems, alongside practical case studies and industry engagement activities to build knowledge and confidence. The project found strong potential for protected cropping to improve supply consistency, extend production windows and support access to premium domestic and export markets. By providing a clear roadmap for adoption, the work helped de-risk future investment and laid the foundation for expansion of protected cropping industries in northern Australia. The Protected Cropping project informed a vision for the protected cropping industry in the tropics and outline region-specific potential pathways to adoption.
