Summary

This project seeks to answer the core research question : how can improved prioritisation and planning practice support new Sustainable Development Precincts in the Northern Territory?

In doing so, it will seek to improve the planning and assessment practice for Sustainable Development Precincts by using a case study approach to progress research which can support improved practice in planning new priority agricultural development areas and improved development assessment within those areas.

This work leverages previous research undertaken by the CRCNA as part of its 2020 work De-risking, brokering and prioritising agricultural development in the Northern Territory.

Expected outcomes

This project seeks to improve de-risking for investment in key NT regions through better practice planning and developing making in Sustainable Development Precincts (SDPs).

Through this approach, the project aims to significantly lift investment in agricultural development in the NT and the consequent consequential gross value of agricultural effort. To this end, the overall project would aim to assist the NT Government to unlock the following key impacts:

  • Influencing the effective alignment of National Environmental Science Program (NESP) investment towards landscape scale de-risking over the next 5 years from mid-2021;
  • Influencing the emerging reforms of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act across Northern Australia
  • Facilitation of additional place-based agricultural investment of some through regional and localised impacts.
