Summary
Despite the Northern Territory’s proximity to international markets and its rich agricultural output, the regions geography – combined with a small and emerging production sector – presents unique challenges to effectively and efficiently supplying international markets.
This partnership-based project aimed to support the NT’s key export and supply chain stakeholders in identifying how the Territory can leverage its strategic location to become a preferred export hub, capable of delivering bulk agricultural and processed food products to international markets.
The project focused on the food, fibre and forestry commodities produced across the NT.
The development of the Northern Territory Driven Supply Chains Report included a gap analysis to determine where efforts should be concentrated to drive industry expansion and economic growth.
Expected outcomes
- Developed a volume and cost data driven model outlining opportunities for the Northern Territory across food, fibre, and forestry commodities (by crop and sector) to inform policy and potentially incentivise industry export aspirations.
- Captured the supply chain landscape, including stakeholder roles (commercial and non-commercial), capacity, and barriers, to evaluate and refine the export opportunities and provide recommendations for future growth.
- Conducted a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) of the NT agricultural supply chains, both domestically and internationally.
