Summary
Water hyacinth is an invasive aquatic weed that was introduced into the Fitzroy River in Central Queensland as an ornamental plant. However, once established in waterways, its long-term impact is significant due to its rapid growth rate, dense biomass, and long-lived seeds.
This project aims to identify and evaluate methods for the beneficial reuse of water hyacinth in the Fitzroy River. This includes exploring its potential as a vector for nutrient removal from the waterway, thereby contributing to improved water quality flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.
Expected outcomes
- Improved water quality and ecosystem condition through the reduction of invasive aquatic weeds in the Fitzroy River.
- Recycling of aquatic weed biomass as a soil ameliorant.
- Reduced reliance on imported soil ameliorants in the Lower Fitzroy region.
- Reduction in the net nutrient levels in the Lower Fitzroy catchment.
- Increased adoption of recycle and reuse principles in land and water management.
- Lower weed management costs for land managers and local councils.
- A cost-benefit analysis of harvesting water hyacinth for each beneficial end use.
