Summary

Project BGreen is a biorefinery based on converting sugarcane juice to glycols and sugar cane biomass into hydrogen. This project has produced a comprehensive techno-economic feasibility study.

It includes the design of a sugarcane factory and refinery that is energy self-sufficient and carbon negative. Diversifying sugarcane processing beyond crystal sugar not only spreads financial risk for growers and industry stakeholders but also presents opportunities for increased industry revenue and enhanced regional economic power. By targeting emerging markets with long-term growth potential, this diversification aims to secure the future of the sugarcane industry in the Burdekin for the generations to come.

Key research questions:

  1. Can the MOSAIK™ monosaccharide process, developed by Danish technology company Haldor Topsoe, be applied to Australian sugarcane?
  2. Can hydrogen be manufactured at scale from sugarcane biomass for use in the glycolisation reaction?
  3. Is the system economically viable and environmentally sustainable?

Expected outcomes

This project aims to de-risk future investment by establishing a robust business case to support discussions with stakeholders, including potential ESG-focused investors. The work undertaken in Phase 1 is critical for enabling strategic engagement with relevant decision-makers and stakeholders.

The project demonstrates the potential to reset North Queensland’s sugar industry by shifting toward higher-value green chemicals.  It offers a pathway to transition the sugar industry away from trade-restricted raw sugar, enhancing financial resilience and regional economic strength.  The strategic insights and knowledge developed through this project clarify both the opportunities and challenges involved in regenerating the sector.

Phase 1 provides the foundation for Burdekin Renewable Fuels to raise $10 million to complete Phase 2, which is intended to advance the approximately $1 billion project to the construction-ready stage.
