Because here’s the truth: northern Australia doesn’t need to be convinced of its own potential. We already know it. We see it daily in the dirt under our boots, the conversations across cattle yards, the research plots, the remote clinics, and the aquaculture farms that are redefining industry. What we do need, and what this conference represents, is the space to keep telling these stories on our own terms.

Too often, the narrative about northern Australia comes from outside looking in. It focuses on deficits, not strengths. On challenges, not solutions. On remoteness, not resilience. But if you spend any time in this part of the world, you quickly realise that the future is already being written here, by people who understand that collaboration, culture, and Country go hand in hand.

That’s why showing this video at DNAC matters. Not because it’s glossy or polished, but because it reflects something real. It reflects a north that’s bold, pragmatic, future-focused, and sometimes a little cheeky. It’s a reminder that development isn’t something that happens to us. It’s something we lead, every day, in partnership with our industries, our communities and our researchers.

Northern Australia’s story doesn’t need a narrator from somewhere else. It needs more platforms for locals to speak with authority, creativity and pride about what’s working, what’s possible, and where we’re headed next.

So as leaders, policymakers, researchers and entrepreneurs gather in Cairns this July, let’s remember: the best ideas for the north come from the north. And the best people to tell those stories? We’re already here, camera in hand, heart full, boots dirty, ready to keep showing Australia, and the world, what’s possible.
